The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death March 2, 2005 of retiree Emily W. Evans of St. Petersburg, Florida, at Palms of Pasadena Hospital in South Pasadena, Florida. She was 79.
Emily (Williams) Evans was born January 19, 1926 in Mineola, NY, and was graduated from Scarborough School in Scarborough, NY in 1943. She attended Albany Business College and Briarcliff Junior College, majoring in English and radio, and received an associate's degree in 1945. She worked in an office at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, in 1946 and 1947, as a typist at Syracuse Supply Company, caterpillar tractor division, in Syracuse, NY, in 1953 and 1954, and as a secretary at Holmes Bros. Inc. in Syracuse from 1965 to 1967.
Emily Evans joined the Institution staff in September 1967 as a keypunch operator in the Information Processing Center, then part of the Ocean Engineering Department, working with Mel Rosenfeld. She became a secretary a few months later, and was promoted to Secretary II in 1974 and to Staff Assistant in 1975. She transferred to the Geology and Geophysics Department in January 1981, remaining there as a staff assistant under Roy Smith until she retired from WHOI in January 1990. She moved to Florida from Falmouth in 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Andrew Evans of Gulfport, FL and Christian Evans of Whitefish, MT; and three grandchildren.
