REMUS

Return to Text

Engineers designed REMUS to escape entrapment below the sea surface. This video, filmed by two Navy divers, demonstrates REMUS practicing its escape from a thick bed of kelp off the California coast. When the navigation computer inside REMUS indicates that the vehicle is stuck, the propeller is triggered to move in reverse to move the vehicle back before shutting down the motor. The vehicle then floats to the surface and waits for the recovery team. To date, no REMUS vehicles operated by researchers at WHOI have been lost.
