sample graph of BIOMAPER sonar data
Sample data from 6 hours of a BIOMAPER survey in Antarctica. Greater scattering, drawn in black to red colors, indicates more or larger particles. The white zigzag at top is the 6-m blindspot on either side of BIOMAPER as it tow-yoed through the water. At bottom left and right the water was deeper than BIOMAPER's sonar range; white space at center is the ocean bottom. The darkest colors reflect dense patches of krill, one patch nearly 3 km (1.8 miles) long, containing perhaps 66 billion individual krill. (graph by Gareth Lawson, WHOI)
