Nootka Buoy

Return to Text

The Nootka buoy sits in the water above ocean-bottom sensors
The Nootka buoy sits in position, more than 2,300 m (1.4 miles) above the sea floor. Instruments on the bottom relay data to the buoy using bursts of sound waves. Solar panels provide power for a satellite link, while instruments collect meteorological data (courtesy Dan Frye, WHOI)
