Subpolar North Atlantic temperature reconstruction from ODP Site 980: The Last Deglaciation
Collaborators: Delia Oppo, Jerry McManus
We have developed high resolution surface ocean temperature and salinity reconstructions spanning the last deglaciation using oxygen isotope and Mg/Ca measurements of planktonic foraminifera from Ocean Drilling Program Site 980 in the subpolar North Atlantic. These records show marked changes in surface salinity during prominent deglacial cold events with reduced deep ocean circulation (Heinrich 1, Younger Dryas), reflecting a combination of 1) reduced incursion of salty subtropical water into the North Atlantic (the shallow leg of the deep conveyor), and 2) iceberg melt water input.
