Factors determining the effectiveness of the biological carbon pump

The vertical profile of POC concentration has a maximum at the surface, where it is produced by photosynthesis, and decays roughly exponentially with depth. A longer remineralization length scale means a longer return time of remineralized carbon and nutrients to the surface. What determines the efficiency with which POC is transferred to depth?
