We are using i) measurements of radium isotopes, nutrients, and trace elements to identifying and track distinct water endmembers; ii) standard oceanographic data from in situ networks to capture the dynamics of the complex coastal environment; and iii) chemical transport modeling to synthesize the observational data and evaluate the ability of different hypotheses to explain the observations. The majority of this work has been done in the bays and estuaries of south Texas and northern California and to date has focused on understanding the estuary-scale geochemical impact of water exchange between estuarine surface waters and sediments. My future plan is to systematically incorporate carbon and nutrient fluxes and eventually, through collaboration, couple the results with biological and ecological models ? with the ultimate goal of developing predictive models for events such as periods of intense algal blooms. |
