I designed the SUPR sampler to collect hydrothermal particulate samples that would reveal the natural range of hydrothermal plume mineralogy. I also designed the SUPR sampler for ocean observatory deployments where it can be used to collect and analyze suspended particulate samples as time series and in response to episodic (e.g. tectonic, volcanic, and storm driven) events in both the deep-sea or surface ocean. With this intention, the SUPR sampler is designed to be compatible with in situ optical methods such as laser Raman spectroscopy, visible reflectance spectroscopy, and image analysis using fluorescent stains. The prototype SUPR sampler is currently being built and trial deployments are planned for this Fall. |
