Surveillance of the prevalence of zoonoses in marine birds and mammals

With support from the NOAA Ocean and Human Health Initiative we have surveyed stranded and bycaught marine birds and mammals for a suite of zoonotic organisms. Zoonotic agents are those that reside in animals and can cause disease in humans. Target organisms include influenza, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Leptospira, and Brucella. We also screened for other bacteria and antibiotic resistance patterns. Publications include:
