1. UPDATE FROM SUSAN AVERY
This weekend, I’ll be taking some time off to drive my son back to school for his final year of college, which has given me cause to reflect. As I turn my thoughts to my first summer in Woods Hole, I feel satisfied with having been able to spend quality time here to dig into the issues, which you’ve heard and read a lot about through my updates, and to take part in some of the activities that only happen in the summer. Of course we’ve had lots of visitors, including MIT faculty, international science leaders, and various managers of federal funding agencies. I made trips to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard to talk with Trustees and learn about the marine-related issues the islanders face. My trip to Martha’s Vineyard included a trip on the Tioga – my first trip on a WHOI vessel! – in and around Edgartown Harbor. I attended many of the special summer seminars like the GFD and the Steinbach scholars, as well as some of the MBL Friday evening lectures. My husband Jim and I have enjoyed living in the village, and as long as WHOI is happy with us being there, we plan to stay in Meteor House. It has been fun having student neighbors to our east and west, and we’ve enjoyed wandering into the village for dinner and sampling many of the local restaurants. I made time to enjoy riding the bike path, swimming in local beaches, and attending some really great community activities like the Woods Hole Film Festival, the Cape Cod Theater Project, and one or two town band concerts by Falmouth Harbor. All in all, summer went by too fast -- I didn’t get to the Cape Light Opera Company, the Cape Cod Symphony or a tour of Highfield Hall, but I have much to look forward to exploring in the coming years.
