The Fifth Symposium on Harmful Algae in the U.S. will be held in Ocean Shores, Washington November 15 - 19, 2009.  This is the fifth in a series of biannual meetings intended to provide a forum for scientific exchange and technical communication on all aspects of HAB research in the United States.  Scientific sessions will cover a range of topics including:
  1. bloom ecology & dynamics
  2. exposure risks & human health
  3. economic and societal impacts of harmful algal blooms
  4. toxin identification & detection
  5. fisheries & foodwebs
  6. modeling, bloom prediction & mitigation
  7. communication, education & outreach
  8. emerging technologies
  9. mechanisms of toxicity.
The conference hotel is the Shilo Inn, where all rooms have an ocean view.  Rooms consist of two queen beds or one king with a pull out single bed.  The rooms are $129.00 per night for single or double occupancy and $149.00 per night for triple occupancy. We encourage meeting participants to reserve rooms at the conference hotel to maximize collaboration and conversation during the symposium.

Optional Special Dinner
On Monday November 16, an optional special dinner has been arranged at the Quinault Beach Resort located 2 miles south of the Shilo Inn in Ocean Shores.  The Quinault Indian Nation has long been involved in HAB issues and would take this opportunity to introduce their culture and food to attendees.
Busses will pick up and return attendees for the dinner beginning at 5:30pm and returning at 8pm.
Quinault Tribal Dancers will do a 30 minute presentation to begin the dinner with interpretive dance and storytelling.  The dancers will then join the group for a dinner of wild, fresh-caught, Pacific King Salmon with all the side dishes.  This will be fresh-out-of-the-ocean King Salmon.  One drink will be provided and a no-host bar will follow.  Costs for the transportation, dancers, dinner and one drink will be $30 per person.  This will be an extraordinary opportunity to experience and meet with people from one of the original cultures of the Pacific Northwest.
