Please Join the Expedition to Discover Planet Ocean, the least explored frontier on earth, by becoming a member of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Associates.

Life thrives on Earth because we have oceans.  Sustaining life and the quality of life on our planet depends on understanding how our oceans work.  We have reached an unprecedented, critical threshold in the history of the human race.  We have more impact on the oceans than ever before, and they have more impact on us.

Here are just a few of the hundreds of questions WHOI scientists are working to answer:
  • What underlying processes cause earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis?
  • How do shifting ocean conditions influence our climate and weather?
  • Can we build an ocean monitoring system to forecast droughts and floods?
  • How do we use coastal resources without harming the environment?
  • How can we sustain fisheries to help feed the world's population?
  • Can we maintain the health of marine ecosystems?
  • What new medical products will develop from marine life?
