YaWHOI - Your guide to navigating the Woods Hole Greater Metropolitan Area

Welcome to Woods Hole!

We hope that this guide will make your acclimation to Woods Hole and Falmouth faster and easier. To that end, this booklet contains reviews of some of the restaurants, shops, health facilities and recreation areas around town. At the end of the booklet, you'll find three town maps (one of Woods Hole and two of Falmouth) to help you find the places reviewed here. There are too many establishments listed here to include on the maps, but the major streets and landmarks shown should help you find your way around the area. In addition, we've included maps of the Bike Path and Beebe Woods.

The booklet is not complete, but we hope enough has been presented in this first edition to help newcomers this summer and provide a framework for future editions. The booklet was written with the intention of helping new students (e.g., Joint Program students, Summer Student Fellows and Minority Trainees) find their way around. As such, the reviews are intended to be used by someone on a student's budget (i.e., $15 / entree is "expensive"). Since it was written by a small subset of students, the opinions contained within are not necessarily universal nor are they the official opinions of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The lists were compiled with the intention of further revision, so be sure to look in a phone book for a more complete listing of services in the area (e.g., dry cleaners). Once again, welcome to Woods Hole and we hope you enjoy your stay on the Cape.

The Student Reps, 96-97

The Black Duck 73 Water St. 548-9165 B/L/D ($5-$20). Fine dining in a casual atmosphere. The Black Duck tends to be touristy - the food is quite good, but the service is very slow during the height of the tourist / summer season. Has an outside deck overlooking Eel Pond. Closed in the winter.

Candy & Go Nuts Luscombe Ave. 548-1758. Assorted candy, ice cream, fudge. Open only in summer.

Captain Kidd Restaurant 77 Water St. 548-9206 L/D Bar ($5-$15). The best burgers in Falmouth ($5-6). The clam chowder is usually very good. Twelve beers on tap, ranging from Budweiser to Guinness. Great view of Eel pond with a wood-burning stove in the winter. It's a "parent place", but it can get noisy in the evenings. Open year around.

Fishmonger's Cafe 56 Water St. 540-5376 B/L/D Bar ($5-$20). Nice atmosphere, good food. One of the better sit-down lunch spots in the Hole. Lunch prices are very reasonable but dinners tend to be a bit pricy. Fishmonger's has real New England charm, complete with views of the Woods Hole drawbridge and the Hole itself. Good for both locals and tourists. Definitely a "parent place". Closed on Tuesdays and during the winter.

Food Buoy 87 Water St. 540-4792 Sandwiches, soups, pizza. Small grocery-type store. Probably the cheapest place to grab a bite to eat in the Hole. Open year round.

Jimmy's Luscombe Ave. 540-6823 L ($3-$5). Sandwich and ice cream shop. Fairly cheap. Open only in summer.

Landfall 2 Luscombe Ave. 548-1758 L/D Bar ($5-$18). Steak, lobster, etc. This would be a parent place. On Monday nights during the summer, prepare for "Monday Night Madness", a dancefest with one dance list for the summer and on Thursdays, go swing dancing. Open only during the summer.

Leeside Bar & Grill 29 Luscombe Ave. 548-9744 A local's bar with plenty of loud 70's and 80's rock and rowdy patrons. Now owned by the Captian Kidd, caused much angst in recent years when it almost became a McDonald's.

On the Waterfront Dining Room at the Captain Kidd 548-8563 D ($10-$30). Fine dining featuring traditional cuisine. Dinner here is more expensive than at the Kidd next door. Open only in summer from 6 to 11 pm.

Pie in the Sky 10 Water St. 540-5475 B/L ($4-6). Great for pastries, sandwiches, etc. -- spanikopita, roll ups, variety of soups (the clam chowder is always good but not always available). Coffee, espresso, cappuccino. Their drink selection is limited and they don't have chips. Excellent potato salad.

Shucker's Raw Bar & Cafe 91A Water St. 540-3850 L/D Bar ($5-$15). The view of Eel Pond is one of the best. A recommended spot for beers and light snacks on the pond. Open 11 am to 11 pm, 7 days a week. Outside deck in summer. Live steel-drum pop/reggae music on weekends.

Local Produce and Fish

There are a variety of local farmer's markets in the summertime throughout the area. Occasionally, there is one in Woods Hole on weekends and one on Main St. in Falmouth. If you have a car, take a trek along 28 towards Hyannis and you'll find a variety of produce for sale.

Jack in the Beanstalk 763 E. Main St. Falmouth (also: 402 N. Falmouth Highway [Rt. 28A] 564-4305). Better quality produce than you'll find at Star or Stop & Shop at comparable prices. Don't let their normal selection outside fool you; if you don't see something you need, ask; very often, they'll have what you want in the back. Good produce at good prices. Note: in general, they do not claim that their food is organic. The Main St. location is open May-October while the N. Falmouth location is open all year; M-Sat 8-6, Sun 8-5.

Clam Man 15 Boxwood Circle, Falmouth, 548-6044. Open M-Th 10-6; F 10-7; Sat 10-5.

Both stores will offer you better selection and in general, much better quality than the seafood sections at the supermarket. Quality ranges from good to excellent depending on day and time of year. Inexpensive salmon steaks and crab cakes at the Clam Man.

Cataumet Fish Market 1360 Rt. 28A, Cataumet, 564-5956. This store is a little out of the way, but has the best quality seafood in the area. Selection is similar to the two above, but in general, the quality is superior. Their fish is often fresh/good enough to make sushi/sashimi. Highly recommended. M-Sat 10-6; Sun 10-5.

Bike Shops

It is a general principle that you'll pay up to 75% more buying bike equipment and accessories locally [rather than buying mail order]. Likewise, fully assembled bikes can be found considerably cheaper via mail order. But by purchasing locally, you get the added value of convenience and hopefully, more personal service. Both casual cyclists and enthusiasts in the Joint Program have had pretty good luck with the stores listed below. Your mileage may vary...

Art's Bike Shop 75 County Rd., N. Falmouth 563-7379 Open 9 - 6 Mon. - Wed. & Sat., 9 - 8 Thurs./Fri., 12 - 5 Sun. Not your fully stocked pro bike shop. Selection is limited. However, for the quick accessories, it's convenient for those living in W. and N. Falmouth.

Bike Zone 278 Teaticket Highway (Rt. 28-So), Teaticket 540-2453 Open 10 - 6 Mon. - Sat., 12 - 4 Sun. Their stock and variety of products has expanded over the years. With a second store in Hyannis (supposedly larger) they often get "not in stock" items within a couple days.

Corner Cycle 115 Palmer Ave., Falmouth 540-4195 Open 10 - 6 Mon.-Fri., 9:30 - 5:30 Sat., 12 - 4 Sun. Good service and very conveniently located in the heart of Falmouth. Their selection is pretty eclectic from basic stuff to $8000 racing bikes with many things missing in between.

True Wheel 670 MacArthur Blvd., Pocasset 564-4807 Open 10 - 6 Mon. - Fri., 10 - 5 Sat., 10 - 4 Sun. This bike shop is a little further away (located between the Bourne and Otis rotaries) but is probably the most complete bike shop in the area. This is the closest thing to a "pro shop" in the area with a good selection in all price ranges. Service is excellent. The shop also caters to enthusiasts with organized on-road and off-road rides. They sell rollerblades, too.

For some unknown reason big name bands seldom come to Cape Cod, however you are within a drive or ferry distance to various venues around the area.

 Boston
For concert listings, check out the Boston Phoenix which is sold at the food buoy. lots of shows, lost of clubs. Also, the WBCN Concert Page has a list of upcoming shows.

Providence
Again, check out the phoenix, or the WBRU Concert Page .
The two main clubs in Providence ( Lupo's and The Met Cafe also have online listings.

 Woods Hole

Wellfleet Beachcomber
This barn on the edge of the Cape Cod National Seashore has various acts during the summer. Sort of a long drive (with cape traffic) but you can go from beach to club in about 150 ft. so that's pretty cool.

The Islands
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is carly simons hangout on the vineyard, while Nantucket has the Muse where my favorite band Guster played a 3 night stand last summer.

HIDDEN SECRETS

Beaches
Parking in lots at beaches requires a parking sticker from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Stickers can be purchased for $10 (residents only) at the Town Hall. There are lots of great beaches for windsurfing. Ask someone you see with a board where to go. In fact, you should consider taking up windsurfing, because this area is one of the best spots in the country for it.

The Knob, Quissett Harbor. Coming from Woods Hole, turn left at Oyster Pond light and go straight to the end of the road. Keep right on the dirt path to get to beach. A beautiful, quiet beach. Good for reading a book and swimming, even in the middle of the summer when other beaches are crowded as it's hard to find.

Stony Beach (MBL beach) Go to the MBL end of Water street and turn right. Turn left on Bar Neck. Turn right at the yacht club. Beach is on your left past the tennis court. Walk to this beach from the village for a swim at lunch. Showers are available.

Nobska Beach Between Oyster Pond Rd. and Church St., Woods Hole Views of the ferries passing and of the lighthouse. Sandier than most other beaches in town and has changing huts. Parking is a nightmare, and there's no where to lock bikes. A short walk from the village or Winding Lane.

Surf Drive Beach Highly accessible from Surf Drive or the bike path. Rocky, but good for swimming. Walk from Oyster Pond apartments.

Falmouth Heights Accessible from Falmouth Heights Road. Very busy in the summer, and parking can be difficult. Similar to Surf Drive Beach.

Martha's Vineyard / Nantucket There are fine beaches all around the island, and there are surfable waves at some beaches on the east side of the island. For the natural types, there are several nude beaches near Gay Head on the Vineyard.

Cape Cod National Seashore If your image of what a beach is includes acres of sand and pounding surf, head for the Seashore. About an hour drive form Woods Hole, you can access the beach at several well-marked locations from Chatham to Provincetown. Keep in mind that the water is a lot colder than in the Sound or Buzzard's Bay.

Other Scenic & Random Treats

Beebe Woods: Great mountain biking and jogging trails located at the end of the road that the Market bookshop in Falmouth is on. Parking lot. See enclosed map.

Bell Tower Garden: This small park is right on Eel Pond, next to the bell tower. Go through the gate and enjoy the peaceful view of the drawbridge from benches.

Bigelow Cupola. Bigelow is WHOI's oldest building. If you climb the side stairs to the top of the building and then walk to the middle of the hallway, you'll find a collection of old black and white phots of WHOI and a circular staircase that leads to the small gazebo on the roof. An upward sliding door will let you out on the roof. It is a great place for a bird's eye view of Woods Hole, Eel Pond, the WHOI dock (and whatever ship may be in), Vineyard sound and the islands.

Eel Pond park: A small grassy area behind the WHOI press office. For WHOI types only. Nice view of Eel pond, and a good place to have lunch.

Fisheries Aquarium End of Water St. in Woods Hole. Very small aquarium with cute seals playing outside. Don't miss the blue lobster.

Spohr Gardens: Turn up Oyster Pond Road from Surf Drive and keep right at the Y (near Oyster Pond condos). Park is on the right after a few houses. A private park open to visitors with spectacular daffodil gardens and an anchor collection. Open only from dawn to dusk. It looks like it's in someone's yard because it is.

Waquoit State Park Located on Washburn Island in Waquoit Bay, E. Falmouth. Camping allowed between April and mid-October. Inaccessible to cars, need a boat to get there. Call for reservations, 457-0495.
