Emeritus
Members
of the Senior Technical Staff* are eligible for Emeritus
status upon retirement. Emeritus status continues the
individual's collaboration with the Institution's Scientific/Technical
staff, but implies no other commitment. The appointment
file consists of the curriculum vitae, a research statement,
a recommendation from the Department Chair or Center
Director, and letters from at least three Institution
scientists/senior technical staff members who anticipate
continuing association with the candidate. The file
is forwarded to the Director of Research for review.
At the discretion of the Director of Research, the file may be distributed to the Department Chairs, Vice President for Academic Programs, and/or the Vice President for Marine Operations for comment. The Director of Research makes the final decision and the file is forwarded to the President and Director for information. Once the appointment is approved, the Department completes an authorization form and forwards it with the file to Human Resources.
An
Oceanographer Emeritus who wishes to continue doing
research and mentoring staff at WHOI, is eligible for
some support from the Institution. He or she may continue
to submit proposals and receive the assistance of department
staff in accordance with normal department procedures.
The support could also include a small amount of overhead
funds for general purpose costs. (See Guidelines
for Obtaining Overhead support for Oceanographer Emeritus).
Institution
support for an Oceanographer Emeritus may also include
providing space for continued research, either the laboratory
or office occupied prior to retirement or other space
available in the department. A small committee composed
of the Department Chair or Center Director and 2 other
members of the department will review the need for space
every three years.
