Science Objectives | |
The technical objectives are to (1) test the functionining of a new in situ chemiluminescent sensor developed by this team integrated on both CTD and HOV platforms, (2) quantify the sensor precision and accuracy, and (3) identify any instrument weaknesses and areas in need of improvement. The science objectives are to (1) measure a short-lived oxygen radical (superoxide) in the water column (via CTD) and associated with biological communities (e.g., corals) in deep waters (via Alvin).

Science Activities | |
The activities will include (1) integrating SOLARIS into the CTD and on Alvin (CTD will be opportunistic), (2) validate signals by conducting first dive at shallow depths where we can do in-line calibration with a UV-VIS spec (only rated to 2000 m), (3) measure superoxide throughout the water column and associated with corals, sponges, etc, (4) collect water/biological speciments for ancillary data.
