Science Objectives

To carry out the recovery and redeployment of the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Irminger Sea Array, servicing four moorings and up to six gliders in an area southeast of Greenland (38-41W, 58-61N).  The platforms will carry multidisciplinary instrumentation and provide the capability for real time communication of data and control of sampling.  A surface mooring will instrument the sea surface and upper ocean, capturing the surface forcing and upper ocean variability.  A profiling mooring will measure through the water column.  Two additional taut subsurface moorings and the gliders will complete the capabilities to obtain vertical profiles and sample the mesocale (10s to 100 km) variability at the site. Shipboard data will be obtained to assess the performance of the instrumentation. Four days will be devoted to the deployment of 5 (NSF) Overturning of Subpolar North Atlantic (OSNAP) moorings, complete a CTD array along the mooring sites, and the recovery of up to 2 sound sources. The OSNAP moorings monitor the velocity, temperature and salinity of the boundary current between ~37.8-41.1 W, 59.6-59.9N.  The OSNAP moorings include 1 tall mooring with its uppermost instrument at 39 m, and 4 shorter moorings with their uppermost instruments between 1300 and 1600 m. Approximately 30 microcats will be calibrated before deployment by means of 'caldips' (detailed below).  CTD/Rosette casts will be made at all mooring locations to collect temperature, salinity, oxygen, dissolved gas, chlorophyll, particulate organic carbon, and carbonate chemistry profiles. Measurements for these parameters will also be made continuously for surface waters using instrumentation installed on the underway seawater line. Along the OSNAP line CTD/Rosette casts will be made between each mooring location as well.

Science Activities

OOI Science Activities (not necessarily in time order - although deployment will occur before recovery):
  1. For each of the four moorings to be deployed
    1. Validate bathymetry at the deployment site, checking the planned positions and perform an underwater test of the anchor acoustic releases
    2. Deploy the mooring
    3. Perform an anchor survey for the deployed mooring
    4. Perform a CTD/Rosette cast
    5. Perform shipboard measurements and analysis in support of calibration and validation of the deployed sensors (including the gliders)
  2. Recover the 4 moorings deployed in 2017
    1. Note: May need to drag for the 2017 surface mooring as buoy is no longer attached to the mooring
  3. Deploy 5-6 gliders in support of horizontal and vertical sampling in and around the array
    1. Two of the above gliders will be configured with oxygen sensors in a location that enables it to sample the atmosphere for calibration purposes when surfacing between profiles.
  4. Recover one remaining 2016 glider, only recover 2017 gliders should issues arise while the ship is in the area.
OSNAP Science Activities:

1. For the ~30 microcat instruments to be deployed, perform 3 calibration dips:
  1. Place ~10 microcats on the rosette frame struts, lower over the side.
  2. Take concurrent CTD and microcat measurements, 12 different depths, ranging through the water column, and to 3000 meters depth.  Wait 5 minutes at each bottle stop.
2. For each of the 5 moorings to be deployed:
    1. Validate bathymetry at the deployment site, checking the planned positions
    2. Perform a CTD/Rosette cast
    3. Deploy the mooring
    4. Perform an anchor survey for the deployed mooring
3. Complete CTD section by performing CTD/Rosette cast between each mooring site.

Other required equipment and special needs:
OOI lost all contact with our Global Surface Mooring (GSM) on Oct 12, 2017.  We believe it has been runover by a vessel and may have broken apart - gone missing.  We will interrogate the subsurface portion of the mooring and recover what is left.  We may have to drag for this mooring if the mooring was dragged or the release doesn't work.

Small boat ops may be required - weather permitting.
