Science Objectives

The goal is to use seafloor geodetic equipment to record the strain associated with the Northern Chile subduction zone.   We will install instruments that are expected to remain on the seafloor for 2-3 years and will be recovered on a later cruise.   Our collaobrators from Germany will use a waveglider to visit their already installed instruments on the seafloor.

Science Activities

We will install 9 systems on the seafloor.  All of these systems will be pre-deployed on a wire in an array that is about 15 km long.   Then, assuming all goes well, we will conduct one very long Jason dive to vistit all of them and complete their installations,  verify the seafloor conditions and benchmark quality, and collect initial measurements.

Additionally some of our colleagues from GEOMAR in Germany will conduct waveglider based communications with their equipment that is already on the seafloor in this vicinity.

Beacon on trawl wire.  Do we have clamps for the trawl wire.  We have clamps that work on the trawl wire - is this a sonardyne beacon??

Waveglider is busted, not going.

Robbie emailed us these questions:1- What sort of release is being used to let go of the tripods at the bottom?  How will you talk to it?

2- We, (the ship), might want a weight on the trawl cable, (so there is some weight during recovery), however this probably not a huge issue since the trawl winch uses a traction head.

3- How much accuracy are you looking for during the initial deployment?  It sounds like you only want to move the tripods if you have to, correct?  That is, if they don't talk to each other.  But it's not clear how precise the initial placement should be.

4- Are we actually setting these directly on the bottom, or are we dropping them the last few meters?

LADCP:  I (Dan Torres) have discussed the LADCP requirements with Jeff McGuire for his cruise on Atlantis. They only need the LADCP measurements for 2 - 3 casts. Therefore, the full dual LADCP system with external battery is not needed. I have one LADCP unit that can accommodate an internal alkaline battery pack. That should provide enough power for all casts.  (picture 0609151233a.jpg is a pic of the LADCP)
