Science Objectives

This project involves shipboard measurement of air sea fluxes using the eddy covariance technique.  Fluxes and sea surface concentrations of acetone, carbon dioxide and dimethyl sulfide will be measured and gas transfer coefficients will be computed.  These gases are important in terms of their impact on atmospheric chemistry and climate.  The primary goal of this work is to obtain simultaneous carbon dioxide and dimethy sulfide gas transfer over a broad range of oceanographic conditions.  This cruise is a high latitude cruise which will focus on areas of high biological productivity and examine the role of bubbles in gas transfer and the influence of near surface gradients on gas exchange.

Science Activities

The goal is to measure carbon dioxide, dimethyl sulfide, and acetone in air, 3 dimensional sonic wind and motion continuously throughout the cruise.  We will also measure carbon dioxide, dimethyl sulfide, and acetone in the ships seawater system continuously through the cruise.  Periodically we like to stop and deploy an air-sea integrated profiler by small boat.  We would also like to do a shallow CDT cast during these deployments.  The profiler will need to be followed during the deployment (~24hrs).  Occasionally we will also sample water directly over the side to measure near surface gradients.
