Science Objectives

We are looking to take ~15 WHOI JP and SAW students on a one-day Tioga cruise to waters immediately NW of Provincetown MA to conduct basic oceanographic training. Both instructors have prior experience conducting this sort of WHOI/APO-supported training exercise on Tioga in past WHOI courses. Both instructors are familiar with Tioga also as research users. This training course plan for 2018 takes into account and compensates for the current Tioga crew presumably having not much experience yet with these sorts of doctoral-level student training cruises.

Science Activities

We'd like to leave WHOI for a daytrip through the canal to a point TBD within ~3 nm NW of Provincetown to conduct a single station with the following sampling. Instructors will provide equipment, all of which has been frequently used on Tioga:

*SBE25 CTD on dedicated wire/wince (Kirincich system; not Tioga CTD/rosette)

*Optical profiling using a Satlantic Hyperpro II system (Laney system)

*Net tows using hand-lowered plankton nets (WHOI Biology Department)

*Bottle sampling using single Niskins on line or nonconducting wire (SSSG provided Niskins)

A tentative schedule is:

<evening before: set up/mob at WHOI dock; instructors>

0800 Embark WHOI dock, Tioga introduction, safety briefing

0800-1000 Transit to Provincetown area via canal; student training with equipment in transit

1000-1400 Sequential operations of hydro profiling, optical profiling, Niskin sampling, net tows

1400-1600 Transit to WHOI; student cleanup and instructional period

1600 Students disembark WHOI

1600-1800 remove equipment/demob

 No hazmats are involved.
