Pioneer Array LNM: Mooring Pre-deployment, November 2013 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The multi-element Pioneer Array will be deployed on the continental shelf and slope south of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The Pioneer Array is part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) funded by the National Science Foundation. The full deployment will occur in multiple phases during 2013 and 2014. The first phase of the Array installation will take place druing 20-26 November, 2013 from the R/V Knorr. Three moorings are to be deployed at three sites, as described below. The nomenclature follows that in the Permit application: CSM = Coastal Surface Mooring, CPM = Coastal Profiler Mooring Water Mooring Name Site Site Location Depth Type(s) of Aid ---- -------------------- ------ -------- ---------- 1 40 21.9 N, 70 46.5 W 91.5 m CPM UI 2 40 08.2 N, 70 46.5 W 133 m CSM CNSM 3 39 56.4 N, 70 46.5 W 450 m CPM UO Pioneer moorings have yellow foam hulls and white or yellow towers. Towers are equipped with radar reflectors and flashing lights, and extend from 3 to 15 ft above the surface. Moorings with permanent surface expressions (CSM, CPM) will have active radar transponders. Mooring lines extending to the seafloor contain scientific instrumentation. In order to avoid interactions with Pioneer Array equipment, mariners are requested to avoid a region defined by a watch circle of 1 km (0.5 nm) radius surrounding each site. More information about OOI and the Poineer Array can be found at http://www.oceanobservatories.org. The contact number for reporting Pioneer Array issues is the Pioneer Array Operations Manager a the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 508-548-1401. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
