Available Sampling Systems - Giant Gravity Core
We’ve deployed this popular tool from more than a dozen ships in the UNOLS fleet. When operated in the crane-assisted [vertical] launch and recovery mode [as illustrated], this large diameter sampler [4” I.D.] does a good job of capturing and preserving the surface sediment. It’s adjustable weight system allows the user to ‘tune’ the corer to optimize sample recovery in varying sediment conditions. The GGC uses inexpensive PVC pipe as its barrel/sample liner and has been used to recover cores up to 6.5 meters in length. Normally operated from a hydrographic winch, this gravity core can travel through the water column at speeds up to 125 meters a minute, which reduces station time required, especially in pelagic ocean depths.
