Summary: |
| Assists
the Director of Computer and Information Services in the management
and development of computing and communications services provided
by CIS. |
| Major
Duties: |
|
The Director
of CIS will assign specific duties, but most duties will focus
on coordinating CIS personnel and resources to provide efficient
and responsive services to the members of the Institution. More
specifically, the Assistant Director will:
- Assists
the CIS Director to evaluate the effectiveness of CIS in meeting
the information technology needs of the scientific, technical,
and administrative staff of the Institution and to develop recommendations
for improvement where appropriate.
- Coordinates
CIS service offerings to ensure they are readily available and
efficient to use by the Institution.
- Coordinates
documentation, help desk support, training, and other communication
efforts between CIS and the Institution.
- Identifies
issues that cross CIS group boundaries and facilitates the resolution
of those issues. Works with group managers to promote communications
and cooperation between units. Represents the CIS Director in
resolving routine operational issues internal to CIS.
- Assists
in the development of new CIS services, including needs assessment,
project planning, managing internal and external project teams,
and documenting project progress and results.
- Assists
with the development of operating and capital budgets.
- Assists
in the selection of outside vendor products and in the monitoring
of their services; may prepare RFP's.
- Acts as
the CIS Director in his or her absence and represents the Director
on internal and external committees as assigned.
- Performs
other such duties as the supervisor may, from time to time,
deem necessary.

| Desired
Education/Experience for Hiring: |
| Significant
understanding and knowledge of programming, distributed networked
systems, and communications technologies is required. Knowledge
of project management methodologies and web design is desirable.
Must have a degree in Computer Science or related field, with 6-8
years experience in a computing or a communications service environment.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead project teams
in a higher education, scientific research or related environment.
Experience with scientific programming and electronic office environments.
Experience providing computing and/or communications support to
project based scientific and technical staffs is highly desirable.
Must have good oral and written communications skills, including
the ability to make technical and non-technical presentations. |
