Job Summary
With oversight, but little supervision of the Port Engineer, plans budgets, schedules, and completes maintenance, repairs and improvement projects for shipboard electronics, and all forms of ship to shore communications, which includes many different computer applications. Supervises other Marine Electronic Technicians.

Major Duties
  • Responsible for planning budgets, scheduling & completing maintenance repairs & improvements to shipboard electronics and all forms of ship to shore communications.
  • Provides management and supervision of other personnel in the Marine Electronics Facility.
  • Maintains the Marine Electronics shop Facility in good order and stocks an adequate supply of repair parts and modern test equipment.
  • Directs technical activities of shipboard Communication/Electronic Technicians (CommET), whose day-to-day activities are directed by the ships’ captains.
  • Provides technical diagnosis or troubleshooting assistance to ship at sea.
  • Plans and orders materials for complex electronics installations and completes such installations.
  • Plans and directs the installation of hardware and /software for the ships computers.
  • Keep current with changes in U.S. (including FCC and USCG) and international regulations affecting marine electronics.
  • Provides information and written support for electronic equipment for inclusion I WHOI proposals.
  • Researches alternative solution for implementation of electronic upgrades on the ships.
  • Oversees orders and maintains inventory of repair parts.
  • May travel to U.S. and foreign ports to effect repair, maintenance and/or installation of shipboard electronic systems.
  • Integrates shipboard navigation and control systems with scientific data systems.
  • Interfaces with other shipboard electronics groups, such as SSSG.
  • Annual budget preparation.
  • Provides long-term care for all electronic equipment, including predictive maintenance and end of cycle replacement.Performs budgeting and product comparison of replacement equipment.
  • Advises the Port Engineer on all matters with regard to shipboard electronics including, but not limited to:
    • Technical upgrades to reflect state-of-the-art-equipment.
    • Regulatory developments
    • Shipboard personnel (CommET) qualifications and performance.
  • Other such duties as may be deemed necessary


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
Formal education/training in electronics, electronic engineering or electrical engineering is desirable.At least 10 years experience in progressively more responsible marine electronics maintenance or service and 3 years as a supervisor or manager of Marine electronic support activities are required.

Special
FCC General Radiotelephone License with Ship Radar Endorsement or “ GMDSS operator/maintainer with radar endorsement” required.
