Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice President of Marine Operations, is responsible for fleet planning which includes the development of design requirements for replacement of WHOI's research vessels.

Major Duties
  • Works with the scientific staff (committees, Department Chairs, etc.) to develop future requirements for access to the sea.
  • Develops candidate vessel/craft characteristics which may satisfy the requirements.
  • Evaluates and selects professional naval architectural services to support the planning activities.
  • Serves as WHOI's representative on a variety of community committees and organizations, such as UNOLS, etc.
  • Conceives, plans and oversees the performance of designs and other studies to enable planning activities.
  • Recommends and implements policies pertaining to marine personnel and vessel operation.
  • Provides for adequate crewing of Institution vessels, in conjunction with the Institution's Personnel Office, as required by regulatory agencies and Institution policies.
  • Serves as WHOI's on-site technical representative for the construction of new vessels.

  • Coordinates the phase-in of newly constructed vessels into WHOI's fleet.

  • Understands the national, state and international regulations governing research ship operations and construction, and ensure compliance therewith.

  • Performs such other duties, from time to time, as the supervisor may deem necessary.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
Advanced degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering required. At least 15 years experience including experience in fleet management (maintenance and operations), and ship construction management. Must have a thorough knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping rules and regulations.
