Job Summary
Reporting to the Mechanical Shop Supervisor, organizes and supervises all mechanic activities and performs a wide variety of mechanic related tasks for all Institution facilities, including research vessels. Performs and/or supervises complex mechanical construction, repair, and installation work involving a wide variety of shop and scientific equipment.

Major Duties

Performs all duties of Senior Mechanic.
Organizes, plans, and supervises activities of Mechanics and Senior Mechanics. Evaluates performance of subordinates and identifies development opportunities.
Participates in budget management duties associated with area of responsibility.
Works with mechanic's hand and power tools, lathe, drill press, power saws, hydraulic press, hydraulic shears, welding equipment and tools, sheet metal tools, heavy equipment (forklifts, crane cars, overhead cranes), ships' machinery (cranes, engines, pumps, and generators), and small boats.
Performs other such duties as the supervisor may deem necessary.

Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
High school or vocational school plus 1 year of training courses in mechanical trades; 10 years experience in marine mechanical work or related field(s). Computer proficiency with common software applications (word processing & spreadsheets). Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to handle and resolve conflict situations; ability to lead projects and prioritize work; ability to handle administrative and financial aspects of the job.
