Job Summary

Reporting to the Mechanical Shop Supervisor, organizes and supervises all welding activities and performs a wide variety of welding related tasks for all Institution facilities, including research vessels.  Performs and/or supervises complex welding, cutting, and brazing work in the contstruction or repair of mechanical equipment.



Major Duties
  • Performs all duties of Senior Welder.
  • Organizes, plans, and supervises activities of Welders and Senior Welders.  Evaluates performance of subordinate and indentifies development opportunities.
  • Works with welding equipment and tools, mechanics’ hand and power tools, lathes, drill press, power saw, press brake, hydraulic shear, sheet metal tools, and heavy equipment (forklifts and overhead cranes).
  • Performs other duties as deemed appropriate by supervisor.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring

High school or vocational school; 15 years experience in welding shop practices.  Must possess one or more welding certificates.  Computer proficiency with common software applications (word processing & spreadsheets).  Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to lead projects and prioritize work; ability to handle administrative and financial aspects of the job.



Physical Requirements

Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50lbs is required.    Other physical requirements include: frequent stooping, reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching and standing. Good hearing and vision are needed to hear and follow safety warnings and requirements.



Working Conditions

The environment may have exposure to extreme environmental and weather conditions (excessive/prolonged heat, cold or humidity and weather conditions), which may include exposure to chemicals and other potential hazards.
