Job Summary

Performs a wide variety of complex welding and metal fabrication I the construction or repair of shipboard, scientific or mechanical equipment.



Major Duties
  • With little or no direct supervision, performs all duties of Welder/Fabricator at a consistently high proficiency.
  • May assign and direct the daily activities of Welder/Fabricators.  May assign work in supervisor’s absence, order parts and supplies, handle cleanliness and safety issues, and maintain shop tools.
  • Works with welding equipment and tools, mechanics hand and power tools, drill press, power saws, hydraulic press, hydraulic shear, lathes, milling machines and rolls.  May also operate heavy equipment such as forklift and overhead cranes.
  •  Performs other such duties ad the supervisor deems necessary.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring

High school or vocational school plus 10 years experience in welding shop practices, with 5 years in the WHOI shop.  Must possess one or more welding certificates. Must possess basic computer skills and have the ability to work with one more CAD programs.



Physical Requirements

Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50lbs is required.    Other physical requirements include: frequent stooping, reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching and standing. Good hearing and vision are needed to hear and follow safety warnings and requirements.



Working Conditions

The environment may have exposure to extreme environmental and weather conditions (excessive/prolonged heat, cold or humidity and weather conditions), which may include exposure to chemicals and other potential hazards.
