Job Summary
Leads and supervises the design, installation and maintenance of all aspects of the WHOI network/data communications systems (WHOInet) used by the Institution in support of its scientific research, business services and external clients. Responsible for planning, budgeting, operating and troubleshooting a 32 building, IEEE 802.3 based 1,300 node multi-campus data network, with services also provided to additional scientific institutions and to varying offside locations.

Major Duties
  • Directs staff to provide support in extending, operating and troubleshooting a complex network and works with peers in Computing and Information Services (CIS) to diagnose networked systems problems.
  • Works with others in CIS to provide long-term goals/plans for WHOInet and oversees the design and  implementation of these plans.
  • Consults with network users to ensure proper support of their networking requirements.
  • Writes RFPs, negotiates and manages ISP contracts and Internet service provided to other scientific institutions in the Woods Hole area.
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
Minimum Bachelor's degree in computer science or appropriate field plus eight years related experience or equivalent combination of education/experience. Strong troubleshooting skills and a thorough knowledge of state-of-the-art networking technologies as well as a sound understanding of the various protocols used. Evidence of strong interpersonal and supervisory skills; demonstrated ability to write clear RFPs. Demonstrated knowledge of the following technologies: fiber optics, twisted pair, ethernet (all IEEE 802.3 standards), ATM, hubs, bridges, routers, high speed switching equipment, WAN technologies (T1, Frame Relay, ISDN), dialin access servers, TCP/IP, IPX, AppleTalk, networking aspects of various operating systems and network management software.
