Job Summary
Reporting to the President and Director, is responsible for the marine operations and facilities of the Institution. Provides leadership in long-term planning and strategies to meet the needs of WHOI scientists and engineers. Ensures that marine operations and goals are consistent with the Institution's policies and procedures. Responsible for creating and maintaining a professional working environment which is diverse, flexible and efficient and which will attract and retain top caliber staff. Works closely and collaboratively with the President and Director, Vice Presidents, Department Chairs, senior staff and members of the Board of Trustees.

Major Duties
  • Responsible for the scheduling, maintenance, operation and quality of the facilities (ships, vehicles, observatories and observing systems) that the Institution maintains to provide access to the sea for ocean research.
  • Oversees the preparation of annual proposals and budgets for the support of WHOI's research vessels, shipboard technical support staff and equipment, and the vehicles in the National Deep Submergence Facility.
  • Oversees the quality of the working environment for the seagoing and shore-based marine operations staff.
  • Oversees the collection, quality control, archiving and dissemination of scientific data collected by WHOI's research vessels, vehicles and ocean observatories.
  • Responsible for long-term planning for WHOI's marine facilities, including the acquisition of new ships, vehicles and observing systems required to meet future needs of WHOI scientists and engineers.
  • Serves as the primary contact at WHOI for matters related to the Institution's marine facilities and access to the sea, and may serve on various national and international boards or committees to represent the Institution in these forums.
  • Responsible for keeping WHOI's directorate, science department chairs, institute directors and trustees updated on developments regarding WHOI's access to the sea.
  • Appoints, in consultation with the Executive Vice President and Director of Research, the Chairs of the Marine Operations and Deep Submergence Advisory Committees, and the Chief Scientist of Deep Submergence.
  • Responsible for the administration and distribution of income from the Institution's Access to the Sea endowment and works with the Vice President for Board and Corporate Relations to raise funds for this endowment.
  • Formulates Institution policy with regard to utilization of WHOI's marine facilities as well as investigator-owned small boats.
  • Oversees the Center for Ocean, Seafloor and Marine Observing Systems (COSMOS).
  • Responsible for WHOI's Dive Facility.
  • Serves on the Institution's Appointments and Promotion Council.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the President/Director and Executive Vice President and Director of Research.


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring
Ph.D. in a discipline related to ocean sciences or other relevant degree with a solid understanding of science and engineering research in an academic setting. 10-15 years of experience with sea-going research and operations, and technologies related to access to the sea. Proven management experience and leadership skills. Good communicator with the ability to represent and articulate the importance of WHOI's marine facilities within and outside the Institution.
