Job Summary:

Supports major marine research activities at the Institution as well as projects for outside users through hands-on leadership of a technical group or facility, applying extensive experience to efficiently manage, maintain and evolve WHOI’s technical capabilities.  A Group Operations Leader is recognized within WHOI as an authority in his/her field of specialization and/or in management of a major group or facility.



Characteristic Duties:
  • Operates as a laboratory or facility head, with full supervisory and management responsibilities

 

  • Uses intimate knowledge of oceanographic and/or shore-based instrumentation and use practices to maintain and evolve (in collaboration with other technical and/or scientific staff as necessary) technical capabilities at the Institution

 

  • Schedules equipment use and personnel activities; interacts with scientists and funding program managers to ameliorate scheduling conflicts

 

  • Assists PIs in the design of experiments, field programs and /or laboratory measurements; constructs cost budgets for carrying out activities; may serve as a lead or sole WHOI PI on proposals to conduct such work

 

  • Interacts with instrumentation vendors/representatives to address issues with existing equipment/protocols and devise/conduct/evaluate tests of new instruments and/or practices

 

  • Responsible for and/or oversees the collection, reduction, documentation and distribution of data sets to the investigators that their group/facility is supporting


Desired Education/Experience for Hiring:

Appropriate academic background or its equivalent relevant work experience, enhanced by more than 15 years of responsibility and achievement.  Candidates for this rank are recognized as leaders and authorities in their field through their sustained contributions.  Through the support activities of their Group or Facility, they must have had far-reaching impact on the scientific and technical activities of the Institution and their field.  They should have a documented high level of creativity and independence with foresight and judgment in planning, organizing and guiding extensive and complex support activities.
