If a researcher has identified an ongoing need for a specific service or product within the broader research community and feels they can help meet that need, they may request establishment of a service center. At WHOI a Service Center is an internal “Cost Center” with specific rates approved by the Controller’s office and charged to all customers equally, both internal and external. Specific conditions must be met before approval of a cost center will be given.
Service/cost centers are established around a particular facility or service for the benefit of the research community.
