Adelphia to phase out discount program
Adelphia has informed WHOI that it will be phasing out the special discount program they offered us on cable modem service. The discounts will be reduced on July 5 and then be eliminated on May 1, 2004. Please see the letter from them for details.

WWW moved to a new platform

Upgrade your VPN client
New versions of the Cisco VPN client are available which address efficiency and security issues. A GUI client is now available for the Mac, along with updated instructions. CIS has tested and approved the available clients for Macintosh and Windows platforms at ftp://ftp.whoi.edu/pub/services/vpn/.

Changes to WHOI firewall policy
Beginning November 12, CIS will be changing WHOI's firewall policy to improve our security from network attacks. As part of this change, we will be asking network service operators to register their services. For details, please read this announcement.

New Measures to Limit Spam
As part of our continuing effort to reduce the amount of spam email (unsolicited bulk email) WHOI users receive, CIS has implemented new measures on the mail servers aimed at filtering out spam. This announcement describes what we're doing, and what you can do to make use of the new facilities in your email account.

Dealing with Spam
Recently, many WHOInet users have informed us that the amount of spam (unsolicited bulk email) they're getting has increased. We're taking several steps to reduce the spam load. One of these is this list of guidelines for email users on how to deal with and report spam.

VPN Service Information
CIS has implemented a new service, allowing access to WHOInet from any Internet Service Provider (in particular but not limited to the cable modem/DSL/high-speed internet services) over what is called a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN service has been tested on various versions of Windows and for Macintosh OS X users. Linux and Solaris versions of the VPN client are available but have not been tested here. Manage your e-mail account (Vacation message, etc.)
CIS has replicated the 'set vacation message' function (and more) at this link, replacing the link that used to be available from the Netscape messenger menu: 'Communicator -> Server Tools -> Mail Account'. You can find it as: 'Email Account Administrator' under the 'Services' drop-down menu and 'Email' item.
