Linux@WHOI: Printing

For several years now, people have been talking about the ideal of a paperless office (or laboratory). Unfortunately, it isn't here yet, and people often find reasons to put computer output on paper. Today, there are scores of different kinds of printers, many of which Linux supports well -- but some of which aren't supported at all.

Most all laser printers work nicely with Linux. Ink-jet printers and other smaller printers are a different matter entirely. Linux ink-jet printer support can be summarized in one sentence: "Buy an Epson." Compared to Hewlett-Packard, Canon, and most other printer vendors, Epson has done far more to ensure that their machinery works with Linux-based operating systems.

Still, there are many other printers that work with Linux, and not all Epson models do. Luckily, there is a very accurate and up-to-date guide to all such matters: the Linux Printing site. Before buying any printer to use with Linux, check with this site's compatibility tables -- they're by far the best resource on whether that printer will work with flying colors, or simply be an expensive paperweight.
