Creating e-mail archives from the mail servers
If the messages that you want to save off-line are currently
on one of the mailX.whoi.edu servers, where X is the first letter
of your e-mail username, then use the CIS e-mail archive service.
The CIS e-mail archive service details:
- First, you choose folders to include in the archive from among
your e-mail folders
- As a reminder: the e-mail folders must reside
on one of the mail servers.
- Then, the service creates an ISO image of
the selected items
- An ISO image is a file that is formatted to be used as direct
input to the burning software and contains the selected e-mail Note: you
use the burning software's option to use a CD image (ISO image) as input. On Roxio's
software it is available on the File menu.
- There is no charge for creating an ISO image.
- Create as many ISO images as you wish, which may facilitate
your organization choices.
- No e-mail is removed from the mail servers during
this process!
- You'll receive an e-mail message with a URL pointing to a
web page with a link to the ISO image
- Each ISO image remains available for 72 hours only and then
will be deleted.
- Finally, you must choose whether to:
- download the image and burn it onto a CD using your own
computer, or
- ask the Helpdesk to burn a CD or DVD for you. If you choose
this option, you will be charged:
- a half hour of Technical Assistance ($26.00 in 2004) per
CD-ROM
- an hour of Technical Assistance ($52.00 in 2004) per DVD
- The ISO image contains 2 top-level folders, emex and INBOX.
- emex contains EmEx, the Email Explorer,
a tool to read the messages in the archive
- and, INBOX contains the actual email archive
Proceed to the E-mail Archive Service requires LDAP
authentication
