Creating e-mail archives from Local Folders
If you are using Netscape 4.x or 7.x as your e-mail client, then
the folders and messages in your Local folders are ready to archive.
- You must have a CD or DVD drive that is capable of writing
in order to use this approach.
- Because it is handy to have the archive reader program on the
CD, prepare to put it on the CD by first copying it to your harddrive:
- Place a media blank (CD, DVD) in your writeable drive.
- Add the folder named 'emex' that you created on your
system's hard drive to the top-level of your disc image.
- Create another top-level folder (same level as 'emex') on the disc image to contain the e-mail
folders. Given our experience, this will greatly facilitate
reading the archive later on. Names such as 'email-archive'
or 'INBOX' will work fine.
- Using the CD burning software on your computer, such as Roxio,
Easy CD Creator, Toast, etc., browse to the location on your
hard drive indicated in your e-mail client under Preferences
(Mail & Newsgroups | Server Settings | Local directory).
- Select the folders that you want to archive and add them to
the disc image so that they will be placed in the top-level INBOX folder.
- Pay attention to the capacity of the media (CD, DVD) as you
add folders.
- When finished selecting local e-mail folders, go ahead and
burn the disc.
