LDAP service upgrade

On the morning of Wednesday, February 16, 2005 CIS replaced WHOI's antiquated LDAP server with a new, faster, and more reliable system.

The LDAP server provides several core functions for WHOI. It stores email passwords, which are used to log in to email and to various WHOI Web sites. It also stores email routing information including vacation messages and forwarding addresses. It is also the back-end for the WHOI Online Phone Book. Please follow this link ---> Required change to your Address Books.

The new LDAP service is running on a pair of new Debian Linux servers, one located in Clark 151 and one in Redfield. Having two LDAP servers will help protect us against failure of the email routing system if one server crashes, or if power fails in either Quissett or Woods Hole Village. Our tests estimate that the new systems are each approximately 25 times faster than the old system at processing LDAP queries.

A new Email Administrator Web page is in place. We hope you like it. If it is confusing or there is something missing that used to be there, please call us and tell us. Feedback about the new Email Administrator to helpdesk at x-2439. Thanks.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the CIS Helpdesk at x2439.
